Add Four Powerful SuperSpeed USB Connections to Your Mac Pro® Tower, Windows® PC, or Thunderbolt™-to-PCI Express Card Expansion System Your computer’s USB 2.0 ports are perfectly adequate for connecting mice, keyboards, and printers, but if you need to connect external storage drives, USB 2.0 ports are underpowered in more ways than one—limiting data transfer speeds to around 25–30 MB/s, they can hardly be called “high performance”. Most drives available today include USB 3.0 interfaces and offer significantly better performance than USB 2.0-equipped drives. Though you can connect them to your computer’s USB 2.0 ports, their performance would be reduced by as much as 85 percent! Don’t settle for slow performance—install a Sonnet Allegro USB 3.0 4-Port card to instantly add four SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports to your system to take full advantage of today’s drives’ performance capabilities. Sonnet specially engineered the Allegro USB 3.0 4-Port card to provide extra power through its ports without the need for you to connect an auxiliary power cable. Delivering up to 10W of power per port, this Sonnet solution supports USB 3.0 bus-powered hard drives, SSDs, DVDs & Blu-ray™ devices without the need to connect an additional AC power adapter.

It's amazing that this technology which is supposed to replace USB 2.0 has so many limitations. Why didn't they work out all the bugs before bringing to market?? Firewire evolved with only a connector change and everything worked fine with adapter cables. Maybe I will just stick with my eSATA card for now (I was wanting the USB 3.0 for the times I would have to pull a customers hard drive to salvage data and USB 3.0 would be nice for that - but, I guess I could just get a SATA dock that has an eSATA port on it). Why didn't they work out all the bugs before bringing to market?? Good question. Part of the answer I suspect is that once drivers are working with OS 10.?, Apple releases a new operating system and the drivers have to be developed all over again. I spent 1.5 years trying to get a Sonnet USB 3.0 card (which uses modified LaCie drivers) to work reliably with Snow Leopard and then work at all with Lion and Mountain Lion. Finally gave up and switched to a CalDigit USB 3.0 card from OWC.

Different installers are available for each of those three OS's and the card works consistently. Obviously I haven't connected it to every available USB 3.0 device but plugging in a WD MyBook just works. Note that that's without installing any software included with the MyBook.
