You should ask this in the C++ forum. What is the problem with the Console Application and/or Desktop Wizard templates? Is it the precompiled headers? I can explain the use of them. I think the students should be taught to use precompiled headers in Visual Studio, at least for simple projects. Since you are using Visual Studio you should understand and teach how to use it the way it is designed instead of automatically use a blank template for everything.
